Hi all,
The site has undergone some significant changes. All positive, I think. Every “frame” has been replaced with a unique image, and I’ve moved the headings outside the frames themselves because I think it looks nicer that way. I’ve omitted the chat box for what I believe to be the foreseeable future, as, after thinking on it more thoroughly, I’ve realized that it’s not particularly high (if anywhere) on my list of priorities. I foreshadowed this in my last post, but the fireplace has also been omitted, and with it, the crackling audio. I actually really liked listening to it in the background, so maybe I’ll have a fireplace on some other place in the site at some point. For now, I’ve settled for Know Who You Are At Every Age by Cocteau Twins. It’s probably my favorite song from them, and I think it suits the theme of the site.
The process of incorporating all of the new images into the site was quite time-consuming, as I didn’t really know what I was doing. I said in a previous post not to underestimate one misplaced /div, and I did that again in my revisions. At least I caught myself quicker than last time, though. I ran into a *lot* of issues with… everything. Images disagreeing on the size I (thought I) set them to, images not appearing, clipping text, ect. Also, as a result of my reliance on disproportionate images, and the surgical precision of every margin and padding box I had to manually set (using px, unfortunately; I only found out about relative sizing after), the site is *extremely* fragile. That is, zooming in or out will destroy the layout of the site. Think about a blobfish brought to the surface. Or a… human brought deep undersea. I was elated to find out that setting the width absolutely in the CSS stylesheet stops this completely; allowing a different issue where the site just shrinks/expands in the corner. I feel a lot better about this, because at least the site is proportionate. Well, as proportionate as I want it to be, at least.
I made a few other changes, too, like organizing my html index completely and fixing a sidebar issue with the Armageddon Wake section that nobody but me could have known about (there aren’t currently enough links there to require the scrollbar’s presence). When I *do* update it, it’ll be ready, though.
I don’t really have any immediate plans. I definitely want to do something with the book at the center of the site, but I haven’t completely made up my mind yet. I also wanted to put Sven in a cage, but I’ve never really used any image editing software, so I don’t know how to make it so he’s in front of the back bars but behind the front bars. I guess he can float around freely in the vacuum of space instead. I also still want a custom cursor and favicon, and—maybe—a custom scrollbar too. Taking another look at the site, it *is* missing something, but I’m not sure what. Maybe small backgrounds around each header? I don’t know. I’m happy with the progress I made, though.
Thanks for reading,
Luke
